Marriage License SC

South Carolina Marriage License Requirements

Regardless of where you live, if your marriage will be performed in South Carolina, you will need a South Carolina marriage license.

The bride and groom must appear together at the office of a South Carolina county probate judge and file a written application. It is a sworn statement that must be signed and notarized in the office of the probate judge.

  • There is a waiting period after the application is filed, often 24 hours. Call the judge’s office and plan ahead.
  • You must present one of the following:
    • Valid drivers license
    • Original birth certificate or a certified copy of your birth certificate
    • Current military identification card
    • Current passport
    • You may need to show Social Security cards
  • The fee for a marriage license varies by county
  • There is no expiration date for a South Carolina marriage license

There are no witness signatures in South Carolina. The bride and groom will sign the license on their wedding day, along with their officiant. The couples keeps one copy while the officiant returns two copies to the appropriate office.
