North Carolina Marriage License Requirements

Apply for your marriage license at the Register of Deeds office in any county. The license will be issued immediately and will be valid for up to 60 days. Both applicants should appear at the Register of Deeds office and must be at least 18 years old.

Details may vary by county, so check with your local office before visiting. See list below. Plan to arrive well before closing to allow enough time for processing, which might be 1-2 hours. In some counties, you can apply online, see web addresses below.

Items you will need to bring

• Forms vary by county
• Social Security number (provide proof with a W-2 form, payroll stub or statement from the Social Security office)
• Photo ID showing date of birth such as: drivers license, state ID card, passport or military ID.
• $60 license fee (often cash only)
• If you’ve been previously married:
  • you’ll need to provide the date of the divorce and possibly a certified copy of the divorce decree. Check with your local office.
• If you were not born in the United States, you must have a certified birth certificate (with raised seal).
• You may purchase certified copies of your marriage license when applying for the license.

You are responsible for delivering TWO copies of the license to me, preferably at the rehearsal. I will complete the bottom portion of both copies, get your two witness signatures, and return the copies to the Register of Deeds within 10 days.
